Buying fountain pens
Nibs and filling
Every STEX fountain pen is fitted with a German Schmidt steel nib, known for a smooth, reliable line straight out of the box. Fill it from a bottle with the included converter, or slip in a standard international cartridge when you travel. Any fountain pen ink works; avoid pigmented and iron-gall inks if you are new to fountain pens.
Choosing a fountain pen
If you write long letters or journal every day, a lighter pen such as a titanium model keeps your hand relaxed. If you like a pen that anchors your writing, a full copper or brass body gives more weight. Many people post the cap on the end of the barrel while writing; each product page shows the length capped and posted, drawn to scale beside a bank card.
Living with copper
Raw copper reacts with air and with the oils in your skin, so the pen darkens over the first weeks and months. That patina protects the metal and becomes a record of how you write. To bring back the shine, polish gently with lemon and salt or a copper cleaner, then rinse and dry, keeping the cleaner away from the nib and section.
